Motherwort and Her Primal Posture!

I was invited today to join a blog party that shares funny stories about harvesting. Its no coincidence that I had planned to harvest motherwort today – which is precisely when I received Darcey Blue’s invitation to share in story medicine on the topic of herbal adventures in the harvest season.

Above is Motherwort, an infamous remedy for menopause. Matthew Wood coins the term “for the freaked out menopausal woman”.

Motherwort addresses heat, sleeplessness, nervousness, obsessive-compulsive, hot flashes, and a person who is generally upset due to hormone imbalances as well as dealing with anger. She just can’t be in her own skin she is so agitated.

Look at the doctrine of signature, spiney, going in all directions, sharp prickly flowers… here is a closeup of her attitude:

Its botanial name Leonurus cardiaca, means “lionheart” which is a big hint for the type person this powerful medicine is for. In most cases in a menopausal, worked up, overheated woman, her heart can be beating rapidly or she could even suffer from hypertension, heart disease, poor vessel health, heart congestion and other forms of heart disease.

What is also so interesting about Motherwort is that it often treats heart health issues in women, but is not as effective for men. Nature is so clever and gifted to know the intricate differences between a man and a woman’s heart…

Its action is cooling, and it is known as a uterine tonic, useful for female problems related with tension. It is also used for hyper-thyroid (an overactive heated misfiring thyroid gland, also a typical menopausal symptom.)

Now here comes the funny part!

After I carefully selected the motherwort plants who wanted to come, I was happily stuffing the jar full of fresh leaf and flower. LOOK at her refusal to go into the jar!!! She was speaking pretty loudly. “NO I’M NOT GOING. I DON’T WANT TO GO, YOU CAN’T PUT ME IN HERE. I JUST DON’T FEEL LIKE IT. AND I HAVE 10 MORE FLOWERS BEHIND ME WITH THE SAME STUBBORN REFUSAL. LOOK HOW STRONG I AM! DON’T TEST ME. (SPIT SPIT)” It was almost like a homeopathic tincture session… where the medicine spoke like the thing that it cures. THAT is good medicine!

If you look back at the top picture, you will note all of her rungs and rungs of prickly flower blooms. Her stalk is strong. She has rung after rung of prickly persistence, just like the prickly heat of an irritated woman in the middle of a hot flash. The “doctrine of behavior” (did I just make a new term?) was so loud, I wanted to pass on this comical story medicine – it makes her hard to forget!

What a great story that bloomed – perfectly on time.
