Why Is It So Hard to Find Herbalists?
Last week we had a kidney stone emergency.
A loved one of mine was rushed to the hospital in acute pain. He was given pain killers (Percoset and 800 MG Ibuprofen) to take together for the pain.
Upon my learning of the news, I immediately thought “Gravel Root!” and rushed to my local natural food store and obtained a combination of Gravel Root, Corn Silk, Uva Ursi, Dandelion Leaf, and a few other herbs. I could picture these herbs like little microbial sandpapers grinding away at this stone ripping through my friend’s kidney tissue. I also advised to drink room temperature water…as much as possible…to help flush out the stone. The stone passed in three days as opposed to other patients taking weeks to a month to pass the stone. It was 5.5 millimeters wide.
I wondered and wished that more people would know of these helpful intricacies of dealing with situations like this. Why don’t people think NATURAL REMEDY when they have a sickness? Please do! We forget that simple, healthy foods and single herbs have their own natural power.
Upon a second visit to the doctor, my friend took the herbs to the doctor and asked her about them. She warned that “people end up in ICU for taking things like that.” What a broad and ill informed statement that was.
After my friend passed the stone, he also made an interesting statement. He said he was glad they worked, but he wanted to understand how the herbs worked, and he didn’t understand why that information was not readily available.
So why is it so hard to find Herbalists?
The answer is two fold.
1. Natural Healing Methods are looked down upon by the majority of Western Doctors as mentioned in the situation above. (Happily there are more and more exceptions every day!)
2. The Food and Drug Administration has deemed that making claim that any product changes body tissue, heals, mends, rectifies or treats… is classified as a drug. If it is a drug, it must be approved by the FDA. It costs $$$ to run trials. And since herbs can’t be patented, it is not profitable to provide these trials to get them approved by the FDA. So since the FDA says we can’t claim that herbs heal anything, this is why herbal information is scant and herbalists are elusive.
A GREAT QUOTE BY MATTHEW WOOD:
I was reading one of my herbal books this morning, actually it was Matthew Wood’s Book of Herbal Wisdom. In it, he says:
…today Milk Thistle is used in German medicine as a specific antidote for Amanita phalloides poisoning (death cap mushroom poisoning). It is not used in the United States because the introduction of a new drug would require millions of dollars in tests to satisfy FDA standards, and no American company would undertake the cost on a drug which could not be patented.”
He puts it so eloquently… the rest of the modern world uses natural healing in their methods, its time we did so again in the United States, together with traditional medicine. We need all methods!
The Menopausal Years
I’m 36 years old. I was watching TV last night and listened to a woman who became an author late in life. She said life doesn’t start for women until they are 50. She said that women don’t really know who they are until they’re 50. She claimed it to be a point in her life where she was finally able to accept herself for all her positive and negative attributes. She stopped worrying about her figure, how skinny, fat, shape, size, appearance. She said at that age you can finally sigh and say “Ah, I don’t have to worry anymore.” The kids are grown, the “mother” stage of life is nearing completion and this is when it becomes all about ME.
Ya know when you look back on your life and smile at how naive you were? And you think to yourself “I wish I knew then what I know now”.
Well I think I decided to stop thinking like that. I am always in a place of wisdom as long as I am in touch with my heart.
Anyway, early morning thoughts…
FDA Approves Pill that Stops Period
Menstruation
FDA approves pill that stops periods; is womanhood a disease? (opinion)
WHAT NEXT? For painful periods, see raspberry leaves, cramp bark, blue cohosh, and many other natural remedies that help women to deal with painful periods and hormonal fluctuations. Before allowing these western methods to stop a natural process altogether, please seek an HERBALIST in your area to try a natural alternative.
THE BEST WAY TO TREAT PAINFUL PERIODS IS BY PROVIDING YOUR BODY WITH THE NUTRIENTS IT IS MISSING THAT CAUSES THE PAIN AND HORMONE IMBALANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
With recent other failures by the FDA such as Avandia (for diabetes) causing heart attack, it is clear that we should not take drugs before educating ourselves about what they will do to our bodies.
Conventional medicine has, for decades, preyed upon the “symptoms of womanhood” and attempted to transform every female activity from childbirth to menstruation into a disease requiring chemical treatment.
Today, the FDA approved Lybrel, a daily pill for women that stops periods… forever.
The concept behind such a pill is based on the false idea that menstruation is a disease requiring a medical fix. Most sane people would agree that menstruation is, in fact, a natural biological function and not a disease. So why take a pill to stop it?
If you ask the women taking this pill, it’s because their periods are extremely painful or inconvenient. Taking Lybrel to stop the period is a typical Western-mindset approach to all ailments: *Mask the symptoms and ignore the cause*. Painful periods have a cause, mostly related to hormone imbalances caused by poor nutritional habits, lack of exercise and exposure to toxic chemicals in foods, medicines and personal care products (which contain hundreds of hormone-disrupting chemicals).
Rather than addressing these underlying causes of poor health, many consumers wish to simply mask the symptoms and make them disappear at any cost, including ingesting potentially toxic prescription drugs whose long-term safety record is entirely unknown.
This desire to eliminate the symptoms of disease rather than addressing the underlying cause of poor health is a uniquely Western approach to health treatment. Americans mask joint pain with deadly COX-2 inhibitor drugs, they mask nutritional deficiencies with antidepressant drugs, and they mask poor cardiovascular health with statin drugs and blood thinners (which are made from rat poison chemicals, by the way, and that’s not an exaggeration). It’s like taking your car to a mechanic and instead of the guy fixing your engine, he just takes a can of spray paint and sprays over the engine warning lights on your dashboard.
Problem solved! No more engine warning lights!
Women who take Lybrel to stop their periods are, in my opinion, doing the same thing with their health. And they’re potentially taking a huge risk since no one knows the long-term consequences of such blatant disruption of normal hormone cycles. You can bet, however, that the results won’t be positive. Although this is just a guess, I believe that long-term use of such synthetic chemicals may greatly increase the risk of hormone-related cancers such as breast cancer and cervical cancer.
They may also cause blood stasis in the abdomen and could very easily, in my view, result in increased endometriosis and severe reproductive problems.
Both the manufacturer of this drug and the FDA, of course, say this chemical is perfectly safe. Then again, FDA-approved pharmaceuticals are right now killing 100,000 Americans each year, even when used as directed. Just one drug, Vioxx, reportedly killed well over 50,000 Americans according to the FDA’s own senior drug safety whistleblower, and yet the FDA voted to put that drug right back on the market!
The hysteria of modern medicine
In my opinion, any woman taking Lybrel is embarking on a foolish experiment with her own health. It is not merely a dangerous course of action to pursue, it is the ultimate surrender of personal responsibility for one’s own health. It also admits to a male-dominated medical system that womanhood is, indeed, some sort of terrible disease that requires treatment.
Note that the words /hysteria/ and /hysterectomy/ (the surgical removal of the uterus) have the same word roots. That’s because a /hysterectomy/ was a procedure originally developed by men and used as a surgical weapon to make women “less hysterical.” It was long believed that the uterus was an organ that caused insanity! In reality, the organ that no doubt causes the most insanity is the penis, but that’s another story… notice that you don’t see male doctors recommending /penisectomies/ as a cure for male insanity. Although, indeed, we would all be much safer if the arrogant men pushing these nonsense pharmaceuticals weren’t so cocky to begin with. Only women are advised to have their organs removed for emotional reasons. You ever notice that when it comes to cancer treatments for such organs, there’s a cry to “Save the testicle!” but “Remove the breast!” ?
(The word /menstruate/, by the way, has its roots in Latin, where the word /mensis/ means “month.” It has no relational meaning to the modern English word “men.”)
Men have always dominated Western medicine, and they have always used chemicals and surgeries to control or dominate women. Even today, the male-dominated breast cancer industry is a for-profit system that preys upon women through harmful mammograms that actually cause cancer and produce shockingly high rates of false positives. As I’ve stated in previous articles here on NewsTarget, mammography harms 10 women for every 1 that it helps. Conventional breast cancer treatment is largely a medical hoax where men use fear to control women by corralling them into treatments where they can poison them with chemotherapy or slice off their breasts. (Sound insane? It is.)
My advice to women is to *learn from your painful periods* rather than trying to dissociate yourself from them. A painful period is a messenger that’s trying to tell you something. Perhaps you need to take a new look at your diet, your lifestyle and your use of toxic cosmetics and skin care products that disrupt normal hormone cycles. *Painful periods can be transformed into painless periods through natural medicine*. Chinese medicine is especially good at supporting this transformation. Diet plays a huge role, too.
Take responsibility for your health rather than abandoning it.
Solving the health problem rather than simply masking it is the responsible thing to do with your body. It’s not an overnight solution like the seductively easy Lybrel pill, but it is a far wiser and more wholesome solution that honors your body rather than hijacking its natural functions. Chemical are not the answer to your health problems.
They are merely seductive, harmful synthetic substances that will inevitably produce harmful side effects.

The Answer To Your Problem Today
Herb Day October 13th 2007

HerbDay is a coordinated series of independently produced public educational events celebrating the importance of herbs and herbalism. HerbDay was conceived of by five nonprofit organizations with interests in herbs and herbalism (the HerbDay Coalition), to raise public awareness about the significance of herbs in our lives and the many ways herbs can be used safely and creatively for health, beauty care, and culinary enjoyment. Greater familiarity with herbs will increase informed use of herbal products and build public support for maintaining personal choice in the use of botanicals.
The date for HerbDay 2007 is set: Saturday, October 13
The first HerbDay was held on Saturday, October 14, 2006, and some celebrated before, during and after that day. Participants in HerbDay broght together individuals, businesses, and organizations that share a love and passion for herbs and herbal medicine. These include herbalists and health care providers using herbs in their practice; authors, teachers and lecturers with expertise in herbs; herbal product manufacturers and marketers; retailers and distributors of herbal goods; botanical gardens, parks, and schools — and most importantly, the people and families who love to use herbs!
What is a Healing Crisis?
by Usui Reiki Master Wendy Stevens
As we experience life, we sometimes encounter negative experiences. From childhood, we gather our experiences and develop our own knowledge and conscience. As our mind, body and spirit encounters these experiences, taking in negative and positive energy, our bodies (especially when we are young) do not know how to process, internalize, and release these experiences. So, our bodies store these experiences until we learn from them, grow from them, seek the lesson, and release the experience. This is the Universe’s way of teaching us wisdom, much as we may not want to learn. Experiences can stay stuck in our bodies for years.
Reiki can help release these stored experiences. It can energetically rid our bodies of the physical memories and energetic blockages that remain there until we learn from them and release them.
I remember before I became a Reiki Master and I was learning and experiencing Reiki, I had a blockage in my solar plexus. There were some experiences that I was holding onto that I thought I had found peace with, yet they were still stuck in my body. The solar plexus is the third chakra, an energy center located in our bodies just below the ribs in the center of the stomach. It is the yellow chakra, the power chakra. This is where our experiences “go in” to our bodies. As I experienced the reiki treatment, I could feel a bubble of pain coming up from my stomach. I was nauseous, and I physically cried, though I was trying to hold back from embarrassment. The experience itself surfaced to my consciousness. As I remembered the experience, the reiki energy assisted in acknowledging it, touchinig the pain, and then removing it from my body, dissipating it into the aether. (For a complete understanding of chakras, see our post on chakras that includes an in-depth video).
After the bubbling up and the crying subsided, I felt exhausted, as though a part of me had just deflated. I was experiencing a HEALING CRISIS.
Definition of a Healing Crisis: As you move toward better health with any natural healing system or better nutrition, a part of the healing process is that the body will begin to discard toxic residues that have built up in your body over the years. The healing process usually does not occur without repercussions. During the initial phase of healing, as your body begins to clean house, (detoxify) and your vital energy begins to repair and rebuild internal organs, you may experience headache, tiredness, flu-like symptoms, fatigue or other symptoms.
The healing path to a joyful life can present itself with what appears as obstacles, when truly they are simply a step up to a new level of awareness.

Flower Essence Highlight: Coming From a Place of Lack
USED FOR HYPOGLYCEMIA, DIABETES, WORRY
Do you find your inner voice constantly worrying about enough money, enough time, love, food, space? Do you feel that if you give $1 to the Salvation Army, or if you offer food to others, that it will hurt you? That you do not have anything to share?
Do you find that your situation in life is so scarce, that you unable to be giving in nature? These feelings effect your body, your soul, and your life, as you withdraw deeper inside yourself, unable to make offerings to society or others.
How do you break the pattern? Recent books like The Secret, The Law of Attraction, and other books on Manifestation will tell you when you are in this constant negative worrying pattern, you are vibrating at a low frequency. You are attracting lack if you are focused upon it. If all you think about is what you don’t have, then you will continue to have nothing. You have to change your thinking for things to change. These books tell us that if we believe we already have those things we feel short of, that we will begin to change the situation and attract abundance.
How do we do this? How do we feel full of money, love, friends and joy if we don’t yet have these things?
Try the Flower Essence Star Thistle. The wisdom of Star Thistle will help your soul to feel as though it is not lacking in anything. It will allow you to connect to your own sense of peaceful abundance, and will allow you to help others, helping yourself.
In this respect, Star Thistle is an effective energetic remedy for Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Your body is craving sugar, and if there is not a sufficient level of sugar in the blood, the body goes into a panic. Suddenly the body feels sluggish, angry, emotional, unstable. Some may experience shakiness, irritability, outrage, physical starvation, hunger pains, tingling in the fingers and toes. Energetically, the body is going into a panic. Energetically, the body is “coming from lack”, panicking that a next meal will not come.
Calm your mind-body-spirit with 1 drop of the Star Thistle Flower Essence.
I have done this personally and it has combatted my hypoglycemia, I simply don’t get it anymore. I can go long periods of time without eating. The Star Thistle taught my body that it has all that it needs within, and it can go a few hours without a dose of sugar to confirm its’ existence.
The Science of Tinctures: Solvency Chart Helps to Conserve Herbs
When making herbal tinctures, a certain amount of herb is combined with a certain amount of alcohol to create a liquid extract. These liquid extract are considered herbal medicines. How do we know how much herb to use in what kind of alcohol?
Below is a link to an excel spreadsheet that shows the scientific best practices. This list was derived from Sharol Tilgner, N.D.’s book Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth:
E X A M P L E :
Common Name: Black Cohosh
Latin Name: Cimicifuga racemosa
Parts Used: Roots & Rhizomes
Time to Harvest: Fall
Best Form to Use: Dry
Ratio of Herb to Alcohol: 1:3
Alcohol % by Volume: 70%
Why use this guideline? This chart offers the lowest solvency that an herb will tincture at, so that a person does not have to ingest more alcohol than necessary. It also conserves the amount of herbs required. For instance, Astragalus root can be tinctured in 4 times as much alcohol, meaning you only need 1/4 cup herb to 1 cup of alcohol to make an effective astragalus root tincture. Saves on the herb! Many thanks to Sharol Tilgner for her research in efforts to conserve herbs and make the best use of ingredients. Also please keep in mind these are *best* practices, not the only practices.
